Splash! Centre Community Youth Network
The Mission of the SPLASH Centre, the Harbour Grace Community Youth Network, is to provide experiences, opportunities, and activities to assist in the total development of children and youth in a safe, supportive, pressure-free environment. By focusing on the assets of youth the network will support young people in acquiring the skills necessary to develop as productive individuals.
Programming
The SPLASH Centre provides support and programming along five Business Lines established for the Community Youth Network. These five lines include Recreation, Learning, Employment and Career Development, Community Capacity Building and Support Services.
Learning
Perhaps the most challenging Business Line is Learning which has been an identified gap in the programming offered at the SPLASH Centre. To date, Learning and Education has been a struggle for the majority of our young people. Currently, we have staff who will provide one on one tutoring to our youth. We find this system works well, as the youth have a rapport with these staff, and feel comfortable asking and receiving help from them. As mentioned previously, we would like to incorporate an Alternative School Program as we are witness to its necessity every day.
Community Capacity Building
Community Capacity Building remains a strong focus at the SPLASH Centre. We are taking youth off the streets and providing them with alternatives. We provide opportunities for recreational activities and social engagements that redirects their attention and promotes positive behavior and community involvement.
Supportive Services
Supportive Services are at the forefront of the SPLASH Centre’s mandate. We have a key partnership with Eastern Health which enables an Adolescent Social Worker to be on-site at the centre weekly. In addition, this partnership is a great tool for making necessary referrals. As well, we are helping youth with basic needs. Through our free Supper Program, youth are enjoying a good meal in a safe environment. We are feeding 20 – 30 youth daily, but they also assist with the program by helping to cook and clean up after. Our supper program has been funded in the past by the United Way. In addition, we provide used clothing at the centre and personal hygiene items, as needed. This is just one example of how invested partners can come together for a common goal to work towards the betterment of youth.
Employment & Career Development
The SPLASH Centre has been very successful with its Employment and Career Development phase through the Changing Lanes program. Participants work on a career plan with the Changing Lanes Coordinators, attend valuable learning sessions facilitated by community agencies, and then go to work in their communities at various locations to gain valuable tools and experience. Oftentimes, youth return to their work placement sites and maintain part time jobs. This program allows the development of a valuable skill set and experience to use in future employment.
